CafeTalk Weekly Topic: The thing that surprised me the most recently was Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga sales

Demon Slayer’s manga sales were very good. So good that some people are asking whether it sold more copies than all of the American comic book industry in one year. Demon Slayers manga sold about 82 million copies in 2020. All of the American comic books sold in 2019 was 83.2 million. American comic book sales have been dropping every year so an estimate of 2020 is slightly above 80 million.

This would mean that Demon Slayer roughly tied or maybe even beat all of the American comic book companies. Even if it ties with American comic book sales it beat Marvel’s comic book sales (Iron Man, Spider-Man, etc.). It also means it beat DC’s comic book sales (Superman, Batman, etc.)

It seems even the marvel movie hype isn’t enough to boost American comic book sales which was a secondary suprise.
